The government of Hong Kong launched a new public wireless internet system for residents and visitors on 21 December. The Next Generation Government Wi-Fi (GovWiFi) Programme will expand the coverage of the wireless network and modernise the technology used to provide a better service.

The new programme extends wireless service to more than 40 new locations across Hong Kong, including popular tourist attractions, locations of high patronage and new types of premises such as law courts, civic centres and police report rooms.

Next Generation GovWiFi uses “IEEE 802.11n”, an updated set of wireless network standards, to provide better signal coverage, more stability in wireless connections and faster performance. IEEE 802.11n allows the use of multiple smart-antennas in wireless devices, significantly increasing data throughput and network range.

The updated programme also supports Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6), the latest version of Internet Protocol, the primary communications protocol upon which the Internet is built. This will enable users to access more websites that support IPv6.

According to Gregory So, Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, locations covered by GovWiFi increased from 30 to 400 since the launch of the programme in 2008, with more than 2000 hotspots. The average number of users per month rose from 20,000 to 700,000.

“To meet the strong public demand we initiated the Next Generation GovWiFi Programme to continue with the provision of high quality free government Wi-Fi services to the general public, with service enhancement in a number of aspects,” said So during the launch ceremony of Next Generation GovWiFi.

Along with these enhancements to the wireless service, the government is revamping the GovWiFi website as well as the GovWiFi captive portal (the authentication page before web surfing is permitted) to facilitate the provision of tailored e-government services to the public.
