The University of Macao (UM) on Friday, October 23rd, initiated an Autonomous Driving Bus Testing Platform, making it the campus's first functioning autonomous driving bus but is still on a trail run.

UM Rector Song Yonghua , stated in the midst of the launching celebration that intelligent transport systems are the future of the automotive sector, and countries all over the world are competing on who will develop better technologies in the field faster.

The mentioned above platform depends on several technologies that are focused on the use of driver-less buses as public transport automobile in over-crowded areas, or ones that experience traffic jams in Macao.

Song added that UM will work on manufacturing creative technologies from the development and encourage smart city projects in Macao and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

The bus is 6.6 meters long and can hold eight passengers when in its two available modes; autonomous and manual.

The autonomous mode has many features, such as detecting static and dynamic obstacles, processing traffic signs, vehicles, cross-walks, people, and traffic lights, not to mention that it can slow down or completely stop based on the given data of the situation.

The autonomous bus also has the ability to switch lanes and stop at bus stops just like regular busses. And the maximum speed is 40 kilometres per hour which is the safety requirements for all buses.
