The sultanate of Oman has established for the first time a focal point of contact for any ICT security breach in the country.

The Oman National Computer Emergency Readiness Team (OCERT) will provide accurate and timely information on current and emerging security and vulnerabilities, key officials of the Information Technology Authority (ITA) said.

Another key objective, they added, was detecting security incidents affecting the country’s information assets and initiating emergency responses.

OCERT, located at the ITA premises at Knowledge Oasis Muscat, Oman’s IT park, was officially launched on Sunday, by the Inspector-general of Police and Customs, Lieutenant-general Malick bin Suleiman Al Ma’amari, in the presence of a gathering of dignitaries including

Mohammed Nasser Al Khusaibi, Secretary-general, Ministry of National Economy and Chairman of ITA, and Dr Salim Sultan Al Ruzaiqi, CEO of ITA.

The setting up OCERT is the latest in the e.oman’ national initiative, Ruzaiqi said, adding: “The Oman National CERT is a part of the e.oman vision to transform Oman into a knowledge society. Growing security risks requires concerted efforts and working together to address these risks and threats.

“CERT aims to serve users of information technology: members of the community, government organisations, and companies, to provide a wide range of services related to information security.” CERT will analyse risks and security threats that may be present in cyberspace and communicate the information to users of Internet services and technical information outlets — public or private institutions, or individuals.

“This added sense of security,” ITA officials pointed, „will also help to build trust when using government eServices. With the current emphasis on expanding and positioning the Official eGovernment Services Portal as the point of contact using government electronic services, enabling users to feel confident interacting with these services is crucial.”
