Transforming Government since 2001
South Africa already has 300 public internet terminals (PIT) at post offices around the country, but plans are advanced to present a mobile one to President Thabo Mbeki's office. This is according to communications department deputy director-general Joe Mjwara, who told members of the multiparty national assembly communications committee that plans weare in place for a further 200 new-design kiosks during the 2003/04 financial year.

However, he said a PIT would be built for the presidency which would be mobile while a further nine mobile ones would be provided for all nine provinces.

Jerry Majatladi of the communications department said the concept was originally known as a public information terminal, "a machine that looks like a box", from which information could be garnered about jobs in government as well as information about government services.

It is a free service which is part of the social responsibility programme of the department, he said.

The sole mobile unit at present is in Pretoria, but it had been used at the African National Congress's Stellenbosch conference in December.

Majatladi said the president's office could use the mobile terminal to accompany him to imbizos (meetings with the people) to foster "e-government to the people".

Mjwara told MPs there were "intergovernment projects in the pipeline where the department of communications will be working with the department of health on telemedicine projects."

He said his department would also be using the PIT program to work with the departments of education, agriculture and the public administration to "digitise" government forms for public use.
