Transforming Government since 2001
Minister of Co-operative Government and Traditional Affairs Sicelo Shiceka says applying for government documents like ID's or services like grants will soon take 90 seconds and not three months as they currently do.

Speaking from Belgium where he is talking to the European Union about it's e-government system, Shiceka says that the system would be implemented in South Africa within 14 months.

While the Europeans have offered to pay for this project, Shiceka would not say what the costs would be.

But, he says that government would break the bank to get this up and running as the benefits far outweigh the costs.

Aside from allowing people access to government services 24 hours a day and seven days a week, this system is geared to cutting down on government’s losses through fraud and corruption.

The minister confirmed that executives from Vodacom has accompanied him to Belgium because rolling out the right cell phone technology would be key to this system in South Africa where few have access to the internet.
