The City of Tshwane’s “groundbreaking” broadband project aimed at promoting an e-government has been put on hold after it was withdrawn from a city council agenda.
The City said the council report approving the project was to be tabled in the council meeting of 25 February 2016.
“However, due to delayed and ongoing engagements with stakeholders, such as National Treasury, the item will have to be withdrawn from the Council agenda… on request of the ICT Department of the City of Tshwane,” said the City.
“The report will likely serve at the March 2016 Council meeting for discussion and approval.”
Dodgy broadband deal
The DA’s Motheo Mtimkulu said the withdrawal of the report happened shortly after he informed the media that Tshwane Mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa was trying to force through the “dodgy broadband deal”.
According to Mtimkulu, the National Treasury had raised major objections to the legality of the contract.
“This is an admission by Mayor Ramokgopa, and the City of Tshwane, that the concerns raised by the DA are legitimate and fatal to the ANC attempts to force this contract through,” he said.
