Jewel City, located 10 minutes from Hillbrow in the Johannesburg CBD, offers residents free high-speed, uncapped fibre Internet, biometric access to apartments, and a digital high school.

Real estate development firm Atterbury led the redevelopment of the six-block precinct in November 2018, with apartments now offered from R3,550 per month by Ithemba Property Group.

Jewel City was funded by the Divercity Urban Property Fund, which includes investors such as Absa Bank, RMH Property, and Nedbank Property Partners. It opened for residents in September 2020.

The aim of the project was to revitalise “a former hub of the diamond and precious metals trade industry, an area that has historically suffered high vacancy and crime rates,” the developers said.

Five of the six blocks of the precinct were redeveloped, while a sixth block was built from the ground up using the EDGE (Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies) system.

Jewel City was awarded a preliminary certificate under this standard, a green building certification system that demonstrates energy, water, and material efficiency.

The precinct includes “solar, LED lights, efficient water fixtures, and energy-efficient central heat pumps, while contributing to carbon emission reductions from it being centrally located.”

Residents in The Onyx block of apartments gain access to free uncapped fibre Internet, DStv and OpenView connections, smart meters for electricity and water, biometric access control, and 24-hour security.

Each apartment has 1 bathroom and 0.5 bedrooms, meaning the kitchen and the bedroom share the same space. The Onyx building also has its own low-fee gym for residents.

The largest two-bedroom apartments in Jewel City go for as much as R5,280 per month, with a one-month deposit. The smallest and most affordable apartments go from R3,550 per month.

Fox Street, which is the central pedestrian spine of Jewel City, cutting between the six blocks, includes a number of retail brands, including a Shoprite, Clicks, Pep, and Pep Home.

There is also a Capitec bank branch and ATMs for the major banks in South Africa. Dining options include a McDonald’s, KFC, Chicken Licken, and Pedro’s, and there is an on-site clinic and a PostNet branch.

Residents can sign up to Ithemba’s MyPerks rewards — ”a thoughtfully curated selection of everyday perks… including grocery coupons with savings of up to R1,250 per month.”

Security is a major focus of Jewel City, being located in a top-ranking region for high-volume and violent crimes in Johannesburg, according to the South African Police Service (SAPS).

Per the 2025/26 crime report statistics from SAPS, the Johannesburg Central Police Station, which is 11 minutes from Jewel City, ranks 13th in the country for serious crime.

However, the statistics also indicate that the general area is improving in terms of criminal activity, as the station was previously ranked 4th for serious crime reports in South Africa.

Residents of Jewel City have access to 24-hour on-site security and an extensive CCTV network in the precinct. It is marketed as the “safest neighbourhood in Joburg CBD.”

Curro DigiEd has a campus in the precinct and is its sole education provider. This particular arm of the private school firm provides e-learning for high school students.

“Our modern, technology-rich schools offer a unique approach to e-learning in class and accommodate only high school learners,” the educator explained on its website.

“With small class sizes and a strong emphasis on 21st-century skills, these schools offer advanced Technology, Science and Mathematics, as well as a Robotics and Coding programme.”

Jewel City is one of the most unique properties in the Divercity portfolio. The company manages more than 3,000 additional secure, affordable flats in the CBD, Maboneng, Berea, and Sunninghill.
