In the recently released E-Government Survey published by the UN, the country topped the Asian charts in e-government, shared first place with the Netherlands in “e-participation”, and came out on top in the general global category for e-government.
Speaking on Korea’s adoption of citizen inclusion in providing “customer-oriented” e-Government services, Alexei Tikhomirov, Acting Head of The United Nations Project Office on Governance, said that “the country has excelled in providing horizontal and vertical e-Government linkages among various institutions and nodal points, creating enhanced opportunities for greater participation and social inclusiveness.”
The top ten places in the global e-government rankings were dominated by Europe and North America, with Singapore being the sole other Asian representative, at tenth place.
Korea will receive the award as a part of the United Nations Public Service Day celebration, which will see 44 public service organisations gathered from 29 countries to participate in the United Nations Public Service Awards (UNPSA) ceremony. The awards are meant to highlight excellence in public service and recognise the officials, organisations and countries that have been responsible for outstanding standards of public service globally.
According to the official press release, the e-Government Special Award acknowledges recipients for: “establishing robust telecommunications infrastructure; investing in the development of human capital the usage of e-Government facilities; providing exceptional e-services; and making e-content available on a continuous basis.”
Korea will also receive awards in the areas of anti-corruption, gender mainstreaming and science and technology, on the day.
