Local towns will be sharing staff to look after their land-use planning and building inspections.

The towns of Trenton, Westville and Stellarton will be hiring one building inspector and one planning development officer while Pictou and New Glasgow will be hiring one person for each position as well to be shared between the two towns.

The Municipality of Pictou County will be looking after hiring fire inspectors that will cover five areas.

Town of Pictou CAO Scott Conrod said the changes will not only save municipalities money, but will also give the municipal units a closer working relationship with people in these new roles.

The Pictou County Shared Services Authority announced earlier this month that it will be closing its planning and development division. The new model will allow for a more streamlined application process for building permits and property-related development agreements. The towns are going to be sharing software and working together to harmonize 15 land-use bylaws to achieve regional consistency.

Both Stellarton and Westville councils approved the shared services agreement during meetings Monday while an agreement between Pictou and New Glasgow is still in the works.

The planning and development agreement between Trenton, Stellarton and Westville states that Trenton will be the host municipality since it has the space within its municipal units to house extra offices when the agreement begins in September.

The cost for each municipality is based on population so Westville’s projected share is $62,761 for 3,800 residents while Stellarton will pay $74,323.14 for 4,500. Trenton’s payment will be $47,897.14 for 2,900.

Last year, the town of Westville’s share for planning through Pictou County Shared Services was $84,000.

The hiring of the building inspector and planning development officer for the three municipal units is expected to take place in August.
