Irish citizens who received Covid-19 vaccinations in Northern Ireland and other non-EU countries will be able to obtain a digital Covid certificate online from later this week.
The Republic's government is creating an online portal after the initial roll-out of the EU digital Covid certificates began in July.
The portal is expected to go live later this week, RTÉ said.
Irish citizens vaccinated outside the European Union with vaccines authorised for use in the Republic will be eligible to apply for the certificates.
The Department of Public Expenditure and Reform, which has responsibility for e-government in the south, said the portal is "being advanced on a cross departmental basis involving technical and process development and resource management".
It said an announcement on the launch of the portal will be made "shortly".
SDLP health spokesperson Cara Hunter said there had been "much confusion" around the Covid certificate issue for Irish citizens living in the north when they crossed the border or visited other parts of the EU.
She welcomed greater clarity from the authorities in the Republic.
Fine Gael TD Neale Richmond said the availability of certificates would "provide relief" for those who had received their Covid vaccine through the NHS.
"This will make travel within the EU and to a number of other countries much easier for everyone from this island, removing the need for costly PCR tests and isolation periods," he said.
"This is a long overdue move but it is most welcome, showing once more the value and importance of getting vaccinated."
