Tier is offering a package of two-wheel options, including e-bikes and cargo bikes through a single app, aimed at increasing a mode-shift away from cars.

Shared micromobility operator Tier has launched two services in Ireland which it reckons lay the groundwork for a “multi-model” future.

The services integrate nextbike by Tier push bikes, Tier e-bikes as well as cargo bikes through a single operator app in the city of Limerick and town of Navan.

Increasing mode-shift

Tier’s latest launch in Navan consists of 20 push bikes, 25 dockless e-bikes and three cargo bikes, providing the right vehicle for the right journey, increasing mode-shift away from car journeys.

The integration of the back-end systems is the culmination of a process that started with Tier’s acquisition of nextbike in 2021. According to Tier, the systems in Navan and Limerick show that the operator is able to offer towns and cities a unified, single-app service comprising of Tier and nextbike vehicles.

Tier claims the services in Ireland are a “proof-point” for its multi-model ambitions, with the operator now able to offer any combination of docked push bikes and e-bikes, dockless e-scooters, push bikes and e-bikes as well as e-cargo bikes, offering the broadest range of vehicle and model options on the market to meet local authorities’ needs.

“The combination of Tier and nextbike by Tier vehicles and models are designed to offer an attractive alternative to driving, especially in urban areas. We’ve coined the term multi-model to highlight the breadth of options we can offer towns and cities, tailored to their specific transport needs,” said Alex Souter, regional general manager, south-west Europe and Middle East, Tier.

“Whatever the best option is, from a docked push-bike service through to a dockless e-scooter and e-bike system with multiple parking options, or both of those, we can create a tailored system to best meet the needs of the local area.

He added: “Our mission is to make it as easy as possible for people to choose to leave their car at home and cycle, e-bike or scoot to where they are going. The more people we can entice onto two wheels, the better we are able to encourage local and national government to install proper segregated infrastructure, and we can start to reclaim the space that cars take up in our towns and cities and give it back to the people who live, work and relax there.”

Tier claims it is now present in 560 cities and communities in 31 countries with a fleet of more than 350,000 vehicles.
