Transforming Government since 2001
One of the objectives of the electronic registration of ECOWAS and African nationals resident in Nigeria by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) is to complement government’s efforts on national security enhancement as well as contribute positively to the world security order.

Speaking at the kick-off of the exercise in Ibadan, on Thursday, the Comptroller of Immigration Service, Oyo State Command, Mr Joseph Olaitan, said the essence of e-registration of foreigners was to also create room for easy identification of foreigners, especially during the forthcoming elections, adding that no foreigner was allowed to participate in the April polls.

The comptroller also said that the biometric registration would help to determine, with ease, foreigners’ locations and activities within the shores of the state, adding that it created opportunities for accurate and robust data on the number of foreigners in the state.

He said the e-registration was an integral part of e-immigration project specifically designed to implement the e-government initiative, which was ultimately targeted towards having an e-Nigeria gate, adding that the exercise was a continuation of the end-to-end automation of other services of the organisation just like electronic passport and electronic payment solutions.

He, therefore, advised people of the state to cultivate the habit of “knowing your neighbour,” adding that they should report in any situation where they suspect movements and activities of foreigners that were inimical to national and collective security to the nearest Immigration Service.
