Transforming Government since 2001
Experts and analysts of Nigeria’s broadband Internet services have said that growing demand for the service could be key to ensuring economic prosperity in the country.

The country’s ministry of information and communication technology hopes that increased government effort will help enhance the service quality and delivery of the sector, especially over worries of poor service has surfaced.

“Nigeria is always in a tough position because we have some great ideas and companies, but too often this gets bogged down by poor service and corruption,” said Thomas Eto, a Lagos-based IT expert.

Analysts and the government hope that a focus on the supply side of broadband infrastructure will receive significant attention in the near future in order to stimulate competition and service quality.

Former President of Nigera’s Internet Group Lanre Ajayi recommends that the new government should implement e-governance and embrace new technologies at all levels.

“Today, most government processes are still being done manually. If you want to fill a form, you will still have to go to the government offices to obtain it,” he said.

“But this can be done online and thus create demand for IT tools and broadband services,” he added.

He continued by pointing out that still, Nigeria’s broadband penetration remains startlingly low and hopes the government will take steps to helping to increase market demand.

“Our emphasis before now has been on the need to make broadband Internet available to the citizens, but today, we have about three cables landing on the country’s shore and yet, broadband is not widely utilized in the country.”
