Transforming Government since 2001
President of the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), Mr. Lanre Ajayi, has called on the Federal Government to set a broadband penetration goal, alongside computer penetration goal for Nigeria, achievable in 5 years time.

Ajayi asked the FG to define policy objectives and strategies for broadband in the area of e-Government, e-Commerce, Information Technology (IT) Park development, Internet Governance Cyber security, Internet Exchange, Spectrum management, and Outsourcing.

He lamented the low level of broadband penetration in the country currently put at 6 percent, and challenged the federal government to set a 50 per cent target for broadband within a five-year development plan.

He suggested the provision of special incentives for operators to encourage them to deepen their investment in broadband network rollout, and tasked government to ensure that every government office is connected to broadband internet.

He challenged government to also deal with the issue of local content on the internet. In the area of computer penetration, Ajayi said the computer devices that would drive internet should also be considered and its penetration increased.

“Each computer should be accompanied with internet Access,” Ajayi said, insisting that by the time all educational institutions are connected to the internet, with the large population of student, the 50 per cent target would have been met.

“That would shoot up Nigeria’s internet penetration rate to 66 per cent”, Ajayi added.
