The pioneer Librarian, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Ogun State, Dr. Taofeek Mabolaje, has urged librarians in the nation’s tertiary institutions to embrace Information Communication Technology to enhance service delivery and their self advancement.

This was contained in a release issued by FUNAAB after Mabolaje delivered a keynote address titled, Library Information Technology Today at the 6th annual workshop of the Nigeria Library Association held at the university.

Mabolaje, who expressed worries at the decline in the quality and productivity of librarians in the country, blamed the development on the apathy of workers in the sub-sector towards self-development and enhancement of their ICT knowledge.

“It is very unfortunate that an average member of staff in the library is not ICT-compliant. This negative attitude is the reason for the downward trend in the output of library personnel and quality service delivery in the country’s institution.”

“There is a symbiotic synergy between a typical library and its members of staff. The former is a reflection of the latter in terms of service delivery. Therefore, the quality of service you get in a library depends on the quality of members of staff there. If library personnel are not ICT literate, no matter how huge the financial commitment to the library, productivity will definitely be at the lowest ebb,” he said.

He said it was shameful that some Nigerians were still looking at ICT as something new, when other nations had almost reached the zenith of ICT.

He, therefore, charged librarians to acquire and upgrade their knowledge of ICT, if they must not be relegated into the Stone Age.

He said, “A librarian that accepts ICT will shape-in but the one that remains non-compliant will shape-out because the concept of library has changed. We should all engage in continuing professional education in order for us to be competent and productive.”

Earlier, while declaring the workshop open, the FUNAAB Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olusola Oyewole, had said the institution’s ‘Nimbe Adedipe Library and the entire adminiatrtaive and academic programmes of the university were ICT-driven.

Oyewole, who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development), Prof. Felix Salako, added, “I must say that this university has been ICT-compliant for many years even when many others apart from the likes of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State and University of Ibadan, Oyo State.

“We have made it a practice that our lecture notes are readily available on the internet. Our sound lecturers are lecturing through the use of multimedia equipment. We are already in the ICT age,” he added.
