The Office of the Surveyor General of the Federation (OSGoF) has launched a high-resolution drone mapping initiative in Abuja, marking a major step towards Nigeria’s smart city ambitions.

At a workshop in Abuja, the Surveyor General, Surv. Abuduganiyu Adeyemi Adebomehin, emphasized that the project will enhance urban planning, security, and disaster management. “This technology ensures Nigeria remains competitive globally,” he stated.

The initiative, which uses Very High-Resolution Drone Imagery and Street View Data, has mapped 20 out of 25 designated zones in the Federal Capital Territory. The 3D digital twin mapping provides a virtual representation of Abuja, aiding infrastructure planning and security operations.

Geospatial expert Waddah Hago, who collaborated on the project, highlighted its efficiency. “In just ten days, we mapped 152 sq km using AI-powered imaging, reducing planning costs and improving governance,” he said.

Afeez Azeez, Head of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing at the Office of the Surveyor General of the Federation, explained that the project’s primary objective is to provide accurate geospatial data for decision-making.

He noted that drone mapping plays a crucial role in national topographical surveys, with applications ranging from urban planning to public safety.
