The Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) on Saturday said it plans to launch a new website to provide electronic services for the commercial and industrial sectors.

Through the website, which will be operational by early 2010, companies in Amman will be able to license their businesses without visiting the municipality's offices, Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) Director of the Control and Inspection Department Ezzedin Shammout said.

"The GAM automation project is part of the overall national e-government programme," Shammout told The Jordan Times.

The electronic system will cover 21 districts within Amman, as GAM will train department heads and concerned staff on maintaining the site, according to Deputy Amman Mayor for Public Services Mustafa Lozi.

The municipality and the ministries of industry and trade, information and communications technology as well as the chambers of commerce and industry and the Civil Defence Department are working with the municipality to develop the website, Lozi added.

The new system will provide 40 services relating to licensing and approving new businesses in the capital, according to Laura Hammoud of the Ministry of Information and Communications Technology's e-Government Department.

The website will reduce the amount of time to license new businesses within the capital by listing required fees and information as well as allowing users to check on their application's status, Hammoud added.

The municipality launched last month the "Amman Explorer" project to help capital residents and visitors navigate the city through the Internet.

The project provides several direct Internet services including search engines for street names and building numbers in addition to categories of land plots and usage, according to the municipality.

This Arabic-language website also provides search engines for major city destinations and infrastructure services for each street and area, including electricity and sewage networks.
