Transforming Government since 2001
Mobile users in the Kingdom can now use their phones to inquire about traffic tickets, water bills, fatwas (religious edicts) and even check on flight schedules at Queen Alia International Airport using the e-government Mobile Portal launched on Sunday.

To use the service, which was launched in cooperation with Zain, Orange Jordan and Umniah, users should download the JAVA application through their mobile operators or www.jordan.gov.jo.

Mobile users in the country, where penetration stands at about 106 per cent, can also send an SMS through the application to ask about 27 government services, the Ministry of Information and Communications Technology said in an e-mail sent to the Jordan Times yesterday.

These include Customs Department services, annual real estate fees, complaints to the Greater Amman Municipality, tenders, employment applications at the Civil Service Bureau, outstanding individual or corporate taxes, the weather forecast and Royal Cultural Centre activities.

Cellphone users can also inquire about progress in transactions at the Land and Survey Department, and services at the interior ministry.

Those whose mobiles are not JAVA-enabled can send an SMS to 94444 to check on any of the e-services provided by the portal, the ministry said, adding that the cost of each SMS is JD0.07 excluding taxes.

Minister of Information and Communications Technology Atef Tal said the portal seeks to enhance e-government services provided to citizens.

Noting that the portal will enhance government services and their speed and accuracy, he highlighted the partnership with telecom companies in the launch of the portal.
