Transforming Government since 2001
Jordan is working a new ICT strategy for the next four years.

The strategy, which is being developed by the Ministry of Information and Communications Technology in cooperation with a consulting company, is expected to be completed before the end of 2012, the Jordan Times reported citing a source at the ministry.

The official said developing the strategy is taking time as the ministry has recently been focused on other legislation such as the e-transactions law and the electronic documentation regulation, which were recently referred to the Cabinet.

The strategy aims to revitalise the sector, increase internet penetration and improve infrastructure as part of ongoing efforts to make Jordan a regional ICT hub.

The country's most recent ICT strategy, which ended in late 2011, succeeded in increasing internet penetration to 50.5 percent.

However, the strategy fell short in attracting investments and creating jobs, according to the ministry.

With an annual growth rate of 25 percent, the sector's contribution to GDP rose from about 2 percent in 2000 to about 14 percent in 2011, according to figures from the ICT Association of Jordan.
