Justice and Local Council Minister Austin Gatt said that in the next two weeks, the first 10 web payphones will be installed in phone boxes all over Malta. In all 80 web payphones are expected to be installed, he continued, while addressing the launching of the first Internet Centre in Birkirkara. The web payphone initiative is a joint venture between the Maltacom Group and the e-malta Commission. The project will initially see the installation of 75 web payphones in different localities across Malta and Gozo, and will offer Internet and e-mail access against payment. However, all e-government web sites will be accessible at no cost. Internet services will be provided by maltaNET and content management will be carried out by di-ve.

This is another important initiative, taken by e-malta and Maltacom, in line with their declared policy of bridging the digital divide and making online technology accessible to the whole population.

Terranet Limited Chief Executive Officer Keith Fearne stated, "Web payphone development is still in its infancy all over the world, and Malta will again be at the forefront of technological innovation through the installation of these kiosks. The kiosks should prove to be very popular with individuals who want to access e-government services online, since there will be no connection charge for this. Other services such as sending an e-mail including a short video message should prove to be quite popular with young people and tourists."
