Malta needs to address its “severe digital skills gap” as almost half the population do not possess at least basic skills, according to an EU index.
Seventy per cent of the Maltese are internet users, which is below the EU average of 75 per cent. But only 55 per cent possess at least basic digital skills, with the EU average standing at 59 per cent.
Digital skills are now needed in every corner of the workforce, the European Commission’s Digital Economy and Society Index pointed out.
Overall, Malta ranked 15th among the 28 EU member states. In relation to last year, the island has progressed in terms of overall score and rank, particularly thanks to progress in connectivity.
However, despite the availability and sophistication of eGovernment services, only 27 per cent of internet users are fully engaging with public authorities online.
Coupled with the country’s digital skills gap, these factors are slowing the development of Malta’s digital economy, according to the index.
