A new information technology (IT) system to be introduced in Serbian commercial courts in February 2003 will enable efficient registering of legal persons; make the entering of changes to the existing data easier; and at the same time allow citizens, legal persons and state organs easier access to the register. This will also crack down on the so-called phantom companies, while commercial courts will be more efficient. The information system of the Republic of Serbia is being developed in line with the Law on information system, which is in line with global IT trends. This IT system is a set of sub-systems related to particular segments of the Serbian public administration linked up into a single database through a joint computer network.

"The court registry of legal persons is one of the sub-systems, which actually represents a central registry of all legal persons in Serbia, updated daily and containing accurate data," said Serbian Minister of Justice Vladan Batic.

The IT system has already been introduced in all 18 commercial courts in Serbia. An IT infrastructure needs to be established and employees need to be trained. This should all be finished by February 2003.

The next step is to promote administration to a modernised level and connect to the Internet. In that way, all citizens could get information on enterprises in Serbia at one moment. This should be in effect by 2004.

According to Director of the Bureau for IT and the Internet Branislav Andjelic registering of individuals, addresses and residential numbers should be finished by 2004.

"Two years ago we opted for an e-government so that public administration and the judiciary could work more efficiently. This what we presented today is the first concrete contribution to this idea," Andjelic said.

The court registry of business subjects for all commercial courts in Serbia is established with the support of the Bureau for IT and the Internet and the Serbian Ministry of Finance and Economy.
