“Bulgaria has the potential to be an engine of positive changes in Southeast Europe, connected with the plans of the European Commission (EC) on the digital single market.” This is what Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev said at his meeting with European Commission Vice President and European Commissioner for Digital Single Market Andrus Ansip, the press centre of the President’s Office announced.
President Plevneliev outlined as an advantage Bulgaria’s good traditions in the field of computer science and programming.
He remarked that Bulgaria had the ambition to turn into a regional centre of information and communication technologies.
“We see the information and communication technologies clusters as a major component of the development of the Bulgarian economy,” Mr Plevneliev remarked.
The Bulgarian Head of state also pointed out that the Bulgarian capital city Sofia was ranked third as most attractive country for start-up business in Europe, after London and Dublin, while Sofia Tech Park is one of its kind innovative eco-system in the region. Andrus Ansip, on the other hand, remarked that the establishment of digital single market
might contribute to the additional growth of EUR 340 billion in the EU. “Physically the EU has a single market but in digital plan there are 28 small markets with different regulations and this sets barriers,” the EC Vice President remarked.
Mr Ansip also outlined the three key fields the efforts for the development of a digital single market would be focused on – easing the access of the consumers and companies to digital goods and services, establishing the needed infrastructure and introduction of set standards for the industry.
