Transforming Government since 2001
As announced on 4 March 2013, the municipality of Rotterdam offers lawyers and notaries the possibility to authenticate official documents and information for lawsuits or legacy investigations online, upon request, thanks to the eRecognition initiative.

With the digitisation of the application process the interested lawyer or notary will apply directly to the appropriate department; therefore, entering data manually belongs to the past.

Each year, thousands of applications are sent to the municipality of Rotterdam. These can now be processed faster and applicants can track online if their application is being processed or shipped. As applicants can identify themselves with eRecognition, security and privacy are guaranteed. The executive councillor of Rotterdam, Ms Jantine Kriens explains: "As we are increasingly able to guarantee safety and privacy, an increasing number of requests can be handled digitally. This will make the process easier and more efficient."

Lawyers and attorneys can fill in their online application using the My Desk option. All online documents requested will be sent via post. The digital provision of these documents is not yet officially possible, as it has to bear a stamp and/or signature of an authorised official.

Background Information

eRecognition was launched in May 2010. A unique characteristic of eRecognition is that accredited private sector providers issue proven eIdentity, authentication and authorisation solutions to businesses and authorities. The programme enables businesses to arrange their affairs with government bodies electronically by maximising public-private cooperation.
