Estonia was the highest ranked Central and Eastern European country.
The table of rankings for 2013 was topped by Finland, followed by Singapore, Sweden, the Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland, the UK, Denmark, US and Taiwan.
The Global Information Technology Report has been published by the World Economic Forum in partnership with INSEAD, one of the world's leading and largest graduate business schools, since 2002.
Estonian IT visionary and lecturers of the IT College, Linnar Viik, said in comment that Estonia was able to improve its position in the WEF ranking since several other countries were developing slower in terms of IT..
“Estonia’s position improved not because Estonia had made spectacular progress in terms of IT, but because several other countries that were previously ranked between 20th and 25th have been doing worse,” said Viik, adding that Estonia’s place among the world’s top twenty IT countries was justified.
Viik said that Estonia was by all IT indicators at the medium level of highly developed countries, while social impact of ICT use and the use of ICT by the public sector were above-average.
Viik added that Europe stood out in the report because eight out of ten highest-ranked countries were from Europe.
