The partnership follows an ongoing government contract with private companies to provide bandwidth capacity necessary for the delivery of electronic government (e-government) services to the public.
After the award of the two-year contract to Telkom Kenya, selected officials from both the directorate of e-Govenment, currently spearheading the rollout of the programme, have undergone Cisco System’s training on bandwidth management and maintenance.
The training is part of the two firms’ contract to provide the government with an enhanced bandwidth capacity of 80Mbps for the delivery of e-government services.
Telkom Kenya chief executive Mickael Ghossein says that the public private partnership (PPP) is meant to “catapult the Kenya government service delivery points to a paperless e-government framework.”
Mr Ghossein said the partnersip would enable the two firms — Telkom Kenya and Dimension Data — to provide aggregated Internet services capacity to the Kenya government through its core common network (GCCN), adding that through the project, the Kenyan public could very soon be in a position to reach public officers on e-mail and access and download information from government websites at very high speeds.
The government common core network is a wide area network which links 31 government offices in Nairobi through the use of high-speed fibre optic cables.
