The Public Service Day (PSD) has become part of a pledge to attain excellence in service delivery.

Speaking during the PSD commemoration in Gaborone on Thursday, July 9, the Minister for Presidential Affairs and Public Administration, Mr Eric Molale said the day accorded public officers an opportunity to reflect on their past experiences on delivering to the nation.

Mr Molale said the overarching theme: Innovating Public Service Delivery to implement the 2016 Post Development Agenda, was work in progress as last year's theme also focused on innovation.

"We must focus on the enhancement of global competitiveness even though our greatest challenge is implementation. We are on the pipeline of reviewing the achievements we have made so far as we approach the last days of our national Vision 2016," he said.

The government, he said, had efficiently implemented projects such as e-government and the computerisation of the Department of Road Transport and Safety vehicle registration and licensing, and also the computerisation of Ministry of Labour and Home Affairs computerization of births and deaths certificates.

Mr Molale said it was important to speed up provision of the requisite infrastructure and also take up innovation at individual's level. He said innovation had nothing to do with rank and position thus appealed to senior officers to provide opportunities to other officers to apply their innovative ideas.

Mr Molale said public officers should also be inspired to embrace the 10-point's agenda which was one of public service's top priority areas.

Permanent Secretary to the President, Mr Carter Morupisi, said enhanced customer service delivery was one of government's top 10 priority areas for the year 2015/16.

"We should therefore embark on various exercises that will enable us to realise this objective, such as benchmarking amongst ourselves and with other entities in Botswana and outside, the aim being to provide current, trending yet innovative services to the people," he said.

Mr Morupisi said an exciting programme was lined up to include reminisces from the UNDP on Botswana's achievements on the Millennium Development Goals, Public Service Innovation which would allow time to reflect on the theme as well as having an opportunity to learn from South African experience on how they were managing their Rural Development Program.
