With 2015 coming to a close, a lot of local organisations are revisiting their pathways in the ICT domain. Botswana’s biggest employer, BotswanaPost, has shown a modest growth in its information and commucation technology deployment. Speaking to reporters at an end of year gathering, BotswanaPost CEO Cornelius Ramatlakwane said a lot has been done in the ICT space at his organisation.

“BotswanaPost launched the Icon of Excellence and come March 2015 we will be in a position to give our stakeholders an idea of our technological partnerships and operational efficiency. Our teams are talking to each other as we speak and we have already set then path for our next plans,” said the CEO.

>However, Ramatlhakwana painted a pale picture of their brainchild, the PosoCloud, saying it did not perform to expectations. The cloud server service was meant to be affordable and flexible enough for businesses in the SME and large market segments and deliver reliability, scalability and uptime. The cloud solutions included mail, calendaring, storage and procurement.

“Poso Cloud did not perform as much as we expected. We want to revisit the project. The major reason for this was that the infrastructure that we intended to utilise has been relocated to BOFINET and then BOFINET went on to slash the prices. This scenario made PosoCloud not succeed.”

One of the entity’s innovations and inventions the Poso card has had a steady progress and was making lives easier for the country’s recipients of government aid and social safety nets. “This card is now used by the elderly and will be now used by the disabled. We have also expanded it into an open Visa, Mastercard and others.”

He told the journalists that the card was easier to use because the user did not have to have a PIN but only the biometrics, some cards can also use retina. This is a real milestone for BotswanaPost,” said the CEO. He explained that the fact that there were about two million SIM card holders in the country had a very huge motivational impact on the technologiacal progress at the company. “We used this as an opportunity. We have now launched the Botswana Post app. Anyone with a mobile phone can download it.

As for the new Poso online Ramatlhakwana said the technology was well received and it was according to him, “very successful.”
