Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) has taken massive measures to digitize its connectivity with rural areas through making digital maps up to union level as well as developing online rural data base.

Geographical Information Service (GIS) of LGED has already prepared digital maps for all the unions of the country which will be available on their website soon.

"Anyone can have access to his or her union's digital map through internet to find out and know details about various service providing centers including health complexes, schools, mosques, markets and growth centers in their respective soon" LGED Executive Engineer of GIS unit Munir Siddiquee told BSS today. He said as per the directives of the present government, the LGED has taken massive measure to digitize its activities for ensuring transparency and efficiency of the department in line with the government's election pledges of building digital Bangladesh.

"We are regularly updating our GIS database and working on establishing connectivity between headquarters and all our field offices for quick data communication," he said.

The GIS unit of LGED has already developed a digital assessment of disaster damages, which will help to conduct quick relief and rehabilitation works as well as making infrastructure development planning just after the natural calamities like floods and cyclone, he said.

The department has taken a mid-term project to develop a customize software for different thematic function to establish e-governance in the LGED.

The Department is also working for development of e- procurement systems and procurement database with the support of World Bank to ensure transparency in the purchasing process, he said.

Besides, the GIS unit of LGED is working for developing a Project Monitoring Information System (PIMS) with the technical support form Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for ensuring firm transparency and accountability in implementing its rural infrastructure and water resource projects.

Under the current digitization initiatives, the GIS unit also working on preparing development master plans for all districts and paurasabhas through using digital mapping.
