Communication companies and parents should ensure that growth of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is for positive changes to the society and not a source of moral-decay, President Ali Mohamed Shein said on Saturday in Zanzibar.

In his speech before launching the ZANTEL's 3G-high speed internet wireless broad band services in the Island, Dr Shein emphasized that growth of technology should mean development.

"As we move from analogy to digital technology, use of mobile phones and internet should ease communication, search for information for students, share ideas and drive us to be innovative," said Shein. He said the history of telecommunication in Zanzibar, from 1880 when the wireless and cable were first installed in the islands is broad, "but Zanzibar is proud to be the first country in the region to have improved communication network."

The president thanked the Zanzibar Telecommunications company Limited (ZANTEL) for its efforts to ease communication, a vital development in economical growth and poverty reduction strategies. "ZANTEL has also maintained its record of being the best tax payer in the past fives year," he said.

Prior to the speech leaders of ZANTEL: Mr Ahmed Mokhles (Chief Commercial Officer), Mr Ali Bin Jarsh (Chief Executive Officer), and Mr Mohamed Mussa (Marketing Manager), said at a joint press that the 3G mobile services is the first in Tanzania.

"The 3G is a HSPA+ technology used on smart phones, but users also will enjoy high speed internet with congestion free date traffic. Unlimited data even for students who want to use online libraries," said the ZANTEL executive at the conference held at the Zanzibar beach resort.

Meanwhile, Shein yesterday officiated the opening of the new building intended for the head quarters of Zanzibar Insurance Corporation (ZIC), at Maisara area, in the Stone Stown. He said the building was the ongoing implementation of the government's strategy to have modern offices. ZIC, he added, should improve its services to win the trust of its customers, "because you can only attract more customers by advertisements for better services."
