This is according to Minister of State in the Ministry of Information, Broadcasting and Telecommunications Dr. Edmond Mansoor.
According to him, full and meaningful effect to the building of this new economy will be given by the completion of a brand new state-of-the-art data centre to be housed in the new Parliament building.
Dr. Mansoor revealed that the new centre was to be housed on the bottom floor of the new Parliament building since the current IT centre was not ideally suited for that type of facility as it pertains to being able to withstand natural disasters. He further added that the new centre is to become the primary data centre for government and will form the basis for the roll-out of the full e-Government programme.
According to Dr. Mansoor, the building is slated for completion and will be handed over sometime in the month of September with the centre being operational from 2 November.
“Recognising the potential of learning and knowledge as an enabler of economic development, the Government of Antigua & Barbuda recognises that ICTs are rapidly transforming the way in which our country operates as part of the global community,” he said.
“By mid-2007, 1,000 new computers would have been deployed in all areas of central government.
“This would double the number of units that are in use in the operations of central government,” he added.
All of these moves according to him are already having a profound impact on the way government operates.
