Transforming Government since 2001
NHS Connecting for Health, which delivers the National Programme for IT, has started a campaign to communicate with all English NHS employees about the forthcoming NHS Care Records Service (NHS CRS).

Working with local NHS organisations it plans to distribute 1.3 million information booklets to every NHS employee. A range of materials outlining the objectives of the NHS CRS, including a booklet, film and posters, will be made available. Strategic health authorities and trusts across England will be responsible for distributing the information to NHS organisations and employees.

"Communicating with every member of the NHS in England is a complex task which is why we are working in partnership with NHS organisations to reach staff no matter where they work or what they do," commented James Herbert, director of communications and stakeholder engagement, NHS Connecting for Health. "We are working hand in hand with NHS bodies and this marks the first step in an extensive information campaign which will ensure that both the NHS and the public are fully aware of the far-reaching ramifications of the NHS Care Records Service."

Initial materials will comprise a twelve page booklet and poster which give an overview of how the programme will work and its impact on various aspects of modern care delivery, as well as an educational film exploring the benefits of the NHS CRS – looking at some of the areas where the system will be deployed.

These will be followed in early 2006 by a more detailed pack which will show how the NHS CRS will specifically benefit GPs, hospital doctors, clerical workers, allied health professionals, nurses and other members of the NHS. Following this second phase, NHS Connecting for Health will begin a wider campaign designed to reach every single member of the public in England.

"It is essential that we have the support of the NHS, which is why we are working closely with NHS bodies to reach staff," added Mr Herbert. "This approach has the backing of all NHS senior executives. With the NHS CRS due to start going live in 2006, now is the right time to start letting people know what to expect via the local network of healthcare organisations."
