HM Revenue & Customs is starting a 'last minute' communications campaign aiming to get nine million people to go online to complete their self assessment tax return, or fill it in on paper.

If self-assessment tax returns are received by 30 September, HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) guarantee to make the calculations and tell you what you need to pay in time for the 31 January deadline for payment. Gillian McIntyre, Revenue & Customs' Business Support Team (BST) said: "We run workshops for the self employed in Northern Ireland, aimed at sole traders and partnerships, which explain how to complete the self assessment return, the expenses and allowances that can be claimed, deadline dates, and how to pay tax.

"The BST have been running a programme of self assessment workshops during September throughout Northern Ireland. We have two self-assessment workshops still to run before the 30 September deadline. So although the self-assessment tax return deadline is fast approaching, it's not too late to seek expert advice."

The self-assessment secure site not only automatically calculates how much tax you owe, but doing it online means your tax return is processed faster, and any repayments made sooner. That's assuming you manage to get your log in details arranged with enough time to allow you do complete your tax online by the deadline.

It's also possible to Self-assessment returns, and payments due, must be received by 31 January - otherwise customers face a £100 fine.

The vast majority of self-assessment tax returns (8.3 million) are submitted by individuals. The remainder comprise 600,000 business partnerships, plus around a quarter of a million trusts and estates.
