Liverpool received a Planning Delivery Grant of £466,640 from the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister. The grant is given to local authorities to help them improve the planning system and reward them for performance against Government best value targets
Liverpool's grant is the seventh highest of all authorities and the authority was rated 14th best out of more than 350 authorities for development control performance. It was rated the best of the major cities and the third best out of 36 metropolitan authorities.
Allocation of the grant is based on council's performance in areas such as the speed of development control, plan making performance, performance at appeal and progress on e-government.
Cllr Warren Bradley, City Council Leader said; "This is the second year running we have had an extremely high level of grant in comparison to other councils for our performance in planning.
"It is particularly pleasing as there has been some very ill-informed criticism of how planning is conducted in the city. But here we have independent acknowledgement that planning in Liverpool is efficient and is playing a key part in the city's regeneration.
"This award is also a recognition of the work of the planning staff and we will be using the grant to make further improvements in the service. There has been a very big increase in the number of applications dealt with and this has brought additional income into the city."
