Coventry City Council has launched a new community messaging system called StreetTV.

The City Council has joined forces with the police, fire service, Coventry Primary Care Trust and CV One to pilot the system at three locations in the city - Holyhead Road, Jubilee Crescent and the Butts.

Effectively large electronic noticeboards mounted on lampposts, the screens will be used to broadcast important messages from the council and its partners to people entering the city.

In the event of a major incident or a large scale sports event, key announcements can be instantly broadcast to people on the street, whilst on a day-to-day basis the new screens will be used to highlight healthy living campaigns, crime awareness messages, traffic announcements and many other key messages.

Councillor Tony O'Neill, Deputy Leader for the Council, braved the cold to attend the launch on Monday 13 March. He said: "StreetTV is a great way to quickly get key messages from the Council and emergency services out to local communities and I'm proud that Coventry is the first place in the country to pilot it. We hope to increase the number of screens around the city if the pilot phase is successful and we will be hoping many community groups will benefit from the service."

All screens and their selected locations have been through a full safety audit and are provided free of charge to the Council and its partners in the project by Streetbroadcast. Streetbroadcast will provide 50 minutes of airtime every hour for the project's partners to supply community messages and information promoting local campaigns. The remaining 10 minutes will be used for 30-second advertisements that Streetbroadcast will sell to fund the messaging system.
