Web job hunts on the up...

he Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is hailing the success of its recruitment website www.jobcentreplus.gov.uk after it received a record 6.5 million job searches in one week. The department said the site now accounts for more than 14 per cent of the overall recruitment market, with more than 70 million job searches conducted via the site since the beginning of the year.

Jobcentre Plus chief executive, Lesley Strathie, said the site provides a vital channel for helping large numbers of people back into work, adding that the growth reflects a wider trend amongst individuals and employers to use the internet to find and fill jobs.

Online research specialist Hitwise puts the site at the top of the pile, with Total Jobs second (with 4.9 per cent of the total online recruitment market) and Monster at four per cent.

According to the DWP, the site works with 275,000 employers to place 17,000 people in work each week.
