Transforming Government since 2001
Wider section of the society will benefit from the high-speed broadband rollout, an independent, consumer advisory body says.

Basically, internet has become a great tool for the people to access information easily and efficiently, which means it has made public and other services more accessible to many more people, according to a Spokesperson for the Communications Consumer Panel (CCP).

These and other social and economic benefits should reach many homes and consumers by expanding the super-fast broadband networks across the country, the spokesperson has suggested.

For example, older people can be provided with online support using telemedicine and other innovative tools, he added.

Similarly, web access can also help teachers and students to make use of online educational resources while providing other services to help the parents to know their chidren’s progress instantly by going online.

Having broadband access at home can help children to do well in their studies, and to have a better career later in their lives, according to a recent study.

The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has recently called for considering broadband as an essential service, just like gas, water or electricity. Super-fast broadband rollout can lead UK to faster economic recovery by creating tens and thousands of jobs and by stimulating GDP growth, FSB said in its statement.

Last week, the new government announced its plans for the rollout of faster broadband services in rural areas. While opening BT’s fibre infrastructure to other providers which do not have their own networks, the plans also include using a part of BBC Licence fee to fund the superfast broadband projects in rural and remote areas which lack market participation.
