Local authorities in England have a new online service for monitoring assistance given to poor areas

The Office of the Deputy Prime Minister has set up a new IT system to help monitor progress towards regeneration in deprived communities.

The web based system, launched on 14 April 2004, contains data for all English local authorities down to district level, although the focus is on the 88 poorest areas that receive Neighbourhood Renewal Funds from the Government. It contains data that is already publicly available, collected from Government departments responsible for health, employment, crime, education and housing.

Known as Floor Targets Interactive, the system aims to make existing data more accessible and provides a mapping tool for users. Jeff Rooker, minister for regeneration said: "ODPM is committed to ensuring that regeneration activities are based on sound evidence of what works. Floor Targets Interactive will enable all those involved in neighbourhood renewal to identify priority areas, monitor progress, and compare themselves with others.

"Floor Targets Interactive also reflects ODPM's commitment to open and accessible government. This resource allows for the analysis, mapping and interrogation of existing data via an interactive website that is freely available and easy to use."

The system is available at the Neighbourhood Renewal website.
