Gateshead, Newcastle, North Tyneside, South Tyneside and Sunderland councils joined forces with Nexus, the transport executive in the area, to set up the interactive offering. Sky, Telewest and Ntl viewers can now access council services for the Tyne and Wear region through their TV sets.
The service has been established to so see if digital TV can be used as a useful platform for council services.
The project is being co-ordinated by the Tyne and Wear ICT and e-Government Partnership (TWICT) as part of the Governments National Project for Digital TV, and will run until April 2005 when its success will be evaluated.
Nearly 40% of households in the region have access to satellite or cable TV and TWICT is inviting people to give feedback on the system using the Your Views button.
The interactive service can be used for finding out about local services, reporting problems, requesting forms, finding out about major events and contacting the council.
