The amount is nearly the same as last year’s spending, during which the government awarded 647 contracts worth over $1.12 billion within the domain of ICT.
During its annual industry briefing on May 19, the IDA – along with several other ministries and government agencies – also announced the projected rollouts in the pipeline for this year, including several “Call-for-Collaboration” ventures: public-private partnerships initiated by the government.
James Kang, Assistant Chief Executive, Government Chief Information Office, IDA, outlined four key sectors within ICT that the government has identified as distinct areas for investment: Business, Data, Infrastructure, and Systems.
Highlighting the diversity of the technology to be harnessed as well as the breadth of possible implementations, he said, “Both SMEs and MNCs are likely to benefit, as two-thirds of all our contracts went to SMEs last year, while one in three went to MNCs. In addition, 80% of the opportunities are worth $3 million or less each, which is very encouraging for small enterprises.”
During the briefing, Singapore’s Ministry of Defence (MINDEF), the Defence Science & Technology Agency (DSTA), the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) and the National Environment Agency (NEA) also shared some of their goals and strategies for the year. A large number of the projects, such as a new Intranet and a new Enterprise Resource Planning system for DSTA, a new Service Centre for MOM, and a new Clearance System for the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA), focused on making business processes more efficient and connecting better with the country’s citizens.
To work toward spurring “innovation and productivity by nurturing a thriving and vibrant infocomm industry,” Tay said that the Singapore government will “continue to facilitate adoption of infocomm across sectors, as well as continued engagement and collaboration between the public and private sectors.” As another step in transforming public service in Singapore, the IDA will launch its next e-Government Masterplan in June this year.
