“We live in exciting times where technology pervades our lives,” said Teo. “Smartphones make up 72 per cent of all mobile phones in Singapore and this number continues to increase.”
Hence the Singapore government has launched mGOv@SG, a one-stop government mobile site congregating more than 40 mobile government services, for customers who want to transact with the government while on the move.
“mGov@SG will make it easier for citizens and businesses to find and use mobile apps and websites of government ministries and agencies,” said Teo.
The mobile site has indeed been optimised for browsing. The various government services can be found through browsing industry categories, organisations or a search function.
After from transforming into a mobile government, eGov2015 also sees the Singapore government sharing textual data with the private and people sectors through the new data.gov.sg portal—a website hosting more than 5000 publicly-available datasets from more than 50 public agencies.
“Similar to government data portals in the US, UK and Australia, this portal will encourage innovative individuals and businesses to stretch their imagination on how government data can be used together with other private data to create new services for citizens,” Teo said.
This new portal with a data catalogue and resource page will make it easier for government data to be discovered and catalyse applications development by publishing data that is in machine-readable formats. Applications that are developed with the information on data.gov.sg will be showcased on the website.
“The data.gov.sg initiative will provide software developers with a convenient channel and increased accessibility to non-sensitive government data,” said Lai Poh Ling, Director, School of Information Technology, Nanyang Polytechnic. “With this consolidated platform, it enables our staff and students to create useful and innovative IT solutions that will benefit the general public and the industry.”
