Livestreaming of incidents to be fed into central control room

Singapore’s police are keeping their eyes on the road, installing up to 570 new cameras on police cars and motorcycles to livestream footage straight back to their headquarters.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has released a tender for the technology, which will be installed later this year.

According to the tender documents, cameras will be fitted to the front and the back of the vehicle to provide colour footage wirelessly back to base, and also to an in-car storage system.

The move follows recommendations by the Little India Riots Committee in June, calling for cameras either on police vehicles or clothing to give a better picture of incidents as they develop.

In August, Prime Minister Loong called for the establishment of a central city ops centre to manage all CCTV feeds from across the city and command emergency services personnel. Speaking about a similar project in Brazil, he said: “All the key agencies report to it, they have cameras around the city so they can see what’s happening, it’s manned by 50 officers and they can give commands and make things happen if there’s a disaster”.

Elsewhere in the region, there are moves in Hong Kong to have more cameras recording police incidents.
