The vast majority of transit riders expect transport operators to offer open loop, contactless payments, according to a global passenger survey by Visa.
More than half of public transit riders (51 per cent) use four or more different payment methods a month for their travel, according to a global survey by digital payments specialist Visa.
They might pay for a bus with cash, a train with a city-specific transit card, a ferry with a contactless card, and rideshare with an app.
Single digital platform
The Visa Urban Mobility Survey was conducted in conjunction with Wakefield Research in May 2023 among 11,500 respondents in 12 markets who take public transportation in Singapore, Japan, Egypt, Australia, US, Indonesia, UK, Pakistan, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Chile.
The survey revealed the concept of mobility-as-a-service (MaaS) is gaining momentum worldwide, as people increasingly seek integrated and rider-friendly transportation solutions.
Putting all mobility services on a single digital platform could make travel a lot easier, giving travellers the ability to transfer seamlessly between trains, buses and bikes or rideshares with just one platform to navigate.
Nearly two-thirds (64 per cent) of surveyed riders expressed interest in using a single mobility-as-a-service platform that combines the ability to plan, book and pay for all their transportation needs.
Key findings of the survey include:
- More than two in five riders (45 per cent) would be more open to trying different forms of transportation, and 42 per cent would ride public transit more days if a single platform was available
- Nearly half of riders (47 per cent) would use public transit more often if rides were fare capped. Improving journey times such as through efficient scheduling, optimised routes and dedicated lanes would also entice more people (52 per cent) to choose to ride versus drive
- The vast majority (94 per cent) of transit riders expect public transit to offer open loop, contactless payments and 63 per cent strongly expect them to be offered. By accepting contactless credit, debit or open loop prepaid cards, transit systems can better meet customer expectations and eliminate the hassle of needing to top up and manage a separate transit card or purchase separate tickets for each trip
- Nearly (37 per cent) would take more trips in a day if they were able to cover all transport payments using just a single payment method
- Nearly two in three (65 per cent) riders are most likely to use contactless payments over the next year, whether a physical or digital credit or debit card or with a physical or digital prepaid card not tied to their bank account.
