How can India make use of AIoT to create smarter cities?

A smart city employs an information and communication technology (ICT) framework to develop, implement, and promote development methods to address urban challenges and build a coordinated, technologically enabled, and sustainable infrastructure. Prime Minister Narendra Modi introduced the Smart Cities Mission on June 25, 2015. By focusing on the social, economic, physical, and institutional foundations of the city, the mission seeks to promote economic growth and enhance quality of life. The objective is to produce replicable models that act as role models for other aspirational cities, with a focus on inclusive and sustainable development. A total of 100 communities were chosen to be transformed into “smart cities” after a two-stage process.

As population and urbanisation keep increasing, several communities will look to cutting-edge networks and contemporary technologies to help them manage resource limitations. AI can prove transformative in India, which has the second-largest population and the largest economy that is developing at the quickest rate in the world.

IN: More e-rickshaws are needed in Goa

Local transport within a city and nearby in Goa is a challenging problem if you do not own or drive a vehicle. Citizens need to move within the cluster for several purposes like going to work, school, shopping, business, office etc. Simply there are no means available beyond some level. The intra-city bus services, unlike in other cities, in Goa are just rudimentary and auto rickshaws, if available, then they are only at a specified stand. One has to go there first. Today’s newspaper had good news that the government is trying to induct 1000 more taxis in Goa. That’s fine for long-distance travellers but what about short distances say, one or 2 Km? We need more auto-rickshaws, waiting at the nearest corner or junction, like any other city in India, now battery-operated e-rickshaws will be environmentally friendly and also pocket friendly.

SmartCitiesWorld (SCW): The concept of a 15-minute city is no longer new but how do you define it today?

Hélène Chartier (HC): Past urban models – especially those developed after WWII – increasingly promote sprawl, car-oriented planning and over-specialisation of city neighbourhoods. Residential areas are separated from business districts, commercial areas and industry, and all of them connected by transport infrastructure that was mainly designed for cars.

Developing urgency: empowering smart building technology for a sustainable future

Network solutions will play a significant role in developing sustainable, future-proof buildings and cities. Currently, smart building technology sits at the confluence of two growing trends: the continual migration of populations into city centres, and the crisis of climate change motivating sustainable infrastructure choices. The climate crisis represents a threat to the future health of our planet. According to a 2021 report by the Climate Action Tracker group, the world is headed for 2.4°C warming by the end of the century, a trend which will continue to fuel more intense storms, heat waves, and droughts — driving instability at the foundations of human societies around the globe. Now is a critical time for sustainable practices to be implemented throughout our economic systems to reduce the impact of human activities on the planet.

The technology is already out in force in some cities, but the true debate on privacy and policies is lagging behind.

In the skies above Chula Vista, California, where the police department runs a drone program 10 hours a day, seven days a week from four launch sites, it’s not uncommon to see an unmanned aerial vehicle darting across the sky. For officers on the force, tapping into this aerial reconnaissance resource has gone from a rare occurrence to a routine one. An officer about to enter a house where a potential suspect might ask “Is UAS available?” over the radio, and one of the department’s 29 drones—or “unmanned aerial systems”—could soon be hovering overhead. When the department needs to be slow and methodical, there’s almost always a drone involved, flying between 200 and 400 feet above the action. Most people wouldn’t realize it’s there.

Urban infrastructure to boost electric vehicles

Urban planning is an ever-evolving discipline. Urban planners are constantly bringing innovations in city planning to make them smarter and more sustainable. Sustainability is the ultimate criterion of any successful endeavor in the modern world. Environmental conservation and greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction are the key characteristics of any smart city. While there are many causes of pollution and GHG emissions in cities, vehicles running on fossil fuels are perhaps the most critical reason. Reducing the dependency on fossil fuels can be the single most important step towards environmental conservation.

In the past few years, electric vehicles (EVs) have emerged as a viable alternative to fossil fuel-powered vehicles. Due to their significantly low environmental footprint, EVs are the key to building a cleaner future. Although the adoption of EVs is gradually increasing, the lack of supporting infrastructure is a big hurdle in front of the mass adoption of these vehicles. The replacement of all diesel and petrol vehicles with EVs is inevitable, therefore it is important for urban planners to plan the cities to suit the needs of electric vehicles.

Security – a smart start for SA cities

High crime rates are a reality of South African life. For that reason, a number of our cities have already created camera-based monitoring systems to deter criminals, or identify and prosecute them if they transgress the law.

One example is Safe City Msunduzi, an entity of the Msunduzi Municipality, which monitors 169 CCTV cameras across Pietermaritzburg. Some are going even further – like the City of Cape Town, which is building on its camera-based system to deploy drones, gunshot sensors and a tech-heavy Highway Patrol Unit that will automatically scan number plates.

    SA’s smart city ambitions

The smart city is not hoverboards and flying cars, which is something of a disappointment for most of us, but is about improving citizen quality of life by transforming resource usage and access to services.

The smart city, as defined by Wikipedia, is a ‘technologically modern urban area that uses different types of electronic methods and sensors to collect specific data’. Forrester says it is interconnected systems that optimise services and improve citizen experiences. And these intelligent environments are considered to potentially be the best route for Africa, which has the highest urban growth rate in the world, according to an analysis across 7 600 urban agglomerations in 50 African countries.

A Security Concern Or An Opportunity For Economic Development? Exploring The Pros And Cons Of Smart Cities

What do you think about when you hear the word smart cities? Flying cars and droids (from Star Wars) taking over human jobs? Well not just yet. Realistically, a smart city seeks to improve the quality of life for citizens by using smart technologies and data analysis…to put it simply.

The value of a smart city lies not in the deployment of several technologies, but rather in the application of these technologies. For instance, a city’s technical infrastructure, which enables people to live and work there while utilizing its resources, would largely decide just how smart the city is.

    How Smart Cities Change Logistics

The city as we know it is changing. Spurred by the pandemic, in which traffic was greatly reduced and outdoor spaces reclaimed, city councils are reimagining traditional concepts of urban planning. City planners are there by looking to design cities that are more sustainable and less congested, and they are utilizing artificial intelligence to assist. Enter the smart city.

By definition, a smart city is a technologically advanced urban area that uses sensors and other IoT devices to collect and analyze data, with the goal of optimizing certain aspects of the city. This can involve everything from identifying patterns in traffic congestion to controlling street lights based on night-time foot traffic.

15-Minute-City Conspiracy Theories Insane Says 15-Minute-City Creator

Yet, city drivers frequently travel painfully slowly in their supposed freedom machines because when there are millions of these freedom machines, they can but only impede each other. Driving to reach distant urban amenities is a needless time sink, posits the Panthéon-Sorbonne professor. Motorists, he observes, travel in a “bubble of illusory acceleration.”

Instead of being perfected for cars, cities “should be designed so that within the distance of a 15-minute walk or bike ride, people should be able to access work, housing, food, health, education, culture, and leisure.”

Metaverse was a constant theme at #LEAP2023 – the international technology conference hosted in Riyadh. It’s easy to see why. The metaverse – or metaverse universe – has captured the imagination and presents multiple visions of the future. Speaking on stage at the LEAP Orbital Talks – Smart Cities (Imagining the Future of Cognitive Cities; Digital Twins, the Metaverse and Modelling the Future) my aim was to qualify the current excitement around metaverse with an objective view of its real-world benefits.

IN: Almost all 100 cities under smart cities initiative doing fairly well: Government

The Centre's assertion came in response to a question in Lok Sabha by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, who asked about "discrepancies" in the implementation of the projects under the smart city programme.

The government on February 9 said that almost all 100 cities selected under the smart cities initiative are progressing "fairly well" with some facing a slowdown in work due to COVID-19 and local factors.

Smart cities are leveraging their smart solutions in responding to this emergency situation. Here's how.

The 100 smart cities mission program, initiated by the Government of India, envisioned the participating cities adopting smart solutions to improve citizen service delivery and consequently their quality of living. As part of their smart city plans, many cities have focused on leveraging technology in the areas of citizen engagement, traffic management, safety & security, emergency response, healthcare management, etc. For ensuring a coordinated management of these various components, the cities have set up integrated command and control centres (ICCC). Presently, around 451 cities have operational ICCCs which has been set up under the 100 smart cities mission.

The smart solutions have, among others, entailed setting up of sensors like cameras across the city for monitoring traffic as well as citizen safety, GPS tracking of public vehicles, variable display boards for disseminating information with all data feeds being tracked, monitored, analyzed and response as required, planned at the ICCC.

The current COVID-19 situation requires city authorities to take various measures for containing the spread of the disease amongst citizens and treatment & care for those affected. Another key role for city authorities is also to provide requisite care for the vulnerable sections of society comprising senior citizens, persons with disabilities, economically weaker sections including the displaced migrant workers.

Social distancing is recognized as the most effective measure for preventing the spread of the disease the world over, and accordingly nationwide lockdown has been declared in India. In this article we will examine how smart cities are leveraging their smart solutions in responding to this emergency situation.

# Tracing and treating the affected:

Most smart cities have leveraged their citizen engagement tools at the ICCC comprising city portals, citizen apps, variable display boards, public address systems, push notifications on mobiles from citizen database to disseminate information and create awareness amongst the citizens on the disease. Some cities have introduced apps through which citizens can respond to 4-5 questions, based on which it can be determined whether they are at risk. If any respondent is assessed to be at risk, connects are made for digitally consulting a doctor over phone or meeting platforms and if required, guiding the person to testing centres in their locality.

Accordingly, city health workers engage with the person identified at risk and guide them on isolation, quarantine or hospital facilities, which are already mapped across the city, by location. The concerned city health workers remain connected with the person and monitor & record his progress till the person is given an all clear. The information from the app is aggregated at the ICCC for city authorities to get a city / specific location wide view of the status of persons identified at risk and determine the hotspots for further action which includes sanitizing the neighborhood, informing citizens staying in vicinity of hotspots, taking decisions on containment measures, etc.

Smart cities like Pune, Surat, Bengaluru, etc. are tracking the status of the disease spread and identifying localized hotspots through integrated data analytics monitored at their respective ICCCs. Planning response through coordination amongst various state/ city authorities is being supported through the ICCC. Analysis of data integrated at the ICCC is also helping the cities with predictive analytics for containing the spread of the virus.

# Managing lockdown:

To get citizens to comply with lockdown, city authorities have to ensure that essential services including groceries, milk supply, medicines are made available at the citizen’s doorstep. This requires that neighborhood shops providing these goods are provided with necessary permits by city authorities for bringing in stock and citizens are aware of the stores which are operating along with timings. The registration, permit issue, and dissemination of information to citizens is being done through the citizen portals, apps such that citizen have view only of operating stores within the vicinity of their residences. The cameras across the city meant for traffic and safety & surveillance are being used to monitor vehicular and people movement in the lockdown areas at the ICCC. Based on incidents of lockdown violations viewed at the ICCC in particular locations, police are informed for ensuring enforcement.

The smart city ICCCs have become the war room through which city authorities are coordinating with other city/ state agencies in the fight to contain the spread of this dreaded virus while trying to ensure that basic city services continue as well as attempting to limit inconvenience to citizens. It is expected that the experience gained in responding to this pandemic situation will help cities further develop the capabilities of their ICCC to become responsive and resilient in any challenging situations that may be faced in future.
