  • UK: XHIBIT criminal justice IT system cuts resource time at more Courts

    The XHIBIT criminal justice IT system has rolled out to Hull, Great Grimsby, Hove and Chichester Crown courts, and Lewes Crown and county court, enabling court users such as the police, prosecutors and witness groups, to obtain necessary case details in minutes rather than days.

    The £20m system, being rolled out across England and Wales, can update individual court users on the progress of a case via criminal justice agencies; these messages are sent either by text, email, or pager. The public can also track court hearings online using the Internet or via public display screens in the court building.

  • UK: XHIBIT criminal justice system wins Guardian awards

    The XHIBIT (eXchanging Hearing Information by Internet Technology) system scooped the first prize in the Joined-Up Government category of the Guardian Public Services Awards as well as this year's overall winner for innovation and progress.

    XHIBIT's implementation programme in 99 Crown courts is due to be completed in March 2006. XHIBIT is a £20 million fixed term contract with EDS.

  • UK: York: Easy does it for council service

    Innovative council workers in York have been shortlisted for a national award – thanks to a hi-tech initiative that has transformed customer service.

    City of York Council’s e-government transformational programme, called easy@york, has been nominated in the Local Government IT Excellence Awards.

    As a result of easy@york, almost a quarter (22 per cent) of requests for council services are now done online, with customers also able to pay for services through the website.

  • UK: York: On-line payment facility now available

    As part of the drive to improve efficiency and reduce administration costs for taxpayers, City of York Council has launched a user-friendly on-line payment facility .

    The facility - which can be accessed via the council's website at www.york.gov.uk/payments - can be used to settle council tax payments, business rates, rent, debtors invoices (where invoices have been sent out for goods and services provided by the council) and housing benefit overpayments. It is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

    North Yorkshire, by area the largest county in the UK, is taking its transactional e-services out to remote rural neighbourhoods as part of the latest phase of its e-government programme.

  • UK: Yorkshire connects 500 sites to next-generation network

    A single high-speed network will enable shared public services across North Yorkshire

    Five hundred public sector organisations in north Yorkshire will be connected to a single high-speed network as part of a major shared services initiative.

    North Yorkshire County Council has teamed up with BT to deliver NYnet, which will allow schools to share applications and online seminars, while child protection services will be able to collaborate better with police and share information.

    The wider population of Hull is to benefit from a scheme pioneered in local schools to improve broadband connections which is now to be rolled out across the community.

    The city was one of the first to look into the possibilities presented by high-speed web access eight years ago.

    It is hopes national and European grants will be available to support the work, which is still in the development stage.

    An initiative to inform council IT buying decisions is launched today.

    The new scheme entitled Certified Open aims to assess the degree of "openness" of a suppliers' products, services and staff. Certified Open logo Certified Open will be launched with a kitemark that will make is easier for buyers to identify "open" companies.

  • UK: Your London.gov.uk wins award for web accessibility

    Your London developed by London Connects, has won a Visionary Design Award for Best News and Information Site.

    The Visionary Design Awards are hosted by the National Library for the Blind (NLB) and took place on 2 March 2005 in London. The Award scheme recognises the efforts of organisations that ensure content is accessible to visually impaired people. It is part of an ongoing campaign by the NLB to encourage website publishers and designers to consider access technology, such as magnification, text to speech and refreshable Braille, when designing their sites.

    Commissioned by London Connects, the project is being implemented by System Associates as the London Portal Development Partner. The public launch of the first phase of the London Portal is expected to be April 2005.

  • UK:'Connect to your Council'-Advertising campaign encourages take up of 24/7 online council services

    A drive to encourage more people to take up better, more modern and efficient council services was launched today by Government. The take-up campaign will use a range of services available online to encourage people to use their local council website as the first port of call when doing everyday chores, such as finding information on rubbish collection, or paying bills. It will also herald the start of a wider communication programme that will highlight the breadth of services that can be dealt with online from reporting abandoned cars to finding school term dates.
  • UK:'electronic Parliamentary Community' launched by Leader of House of Commons

    Leader of the House of Commons and Lord Privy Seal Peter Hain MP mad a written statement yesterday to the Commons in which he announced the launch of the electronic Parliamentary Community.

    He said: "I am pleased to announce today the launch of the electronic Parliamentary Community (ePC). This network, initiated by my Office, establishes, for the first time, the electronic transfer of information between Government and Parliament."

  • UK:Antrim Borough Council to develop new ICT strategy to boost service delivery

    Antrim Borough Council has commissioned Socitm Consulting to review and make recommendations about the development of a new ICT strategy, which will emphasise efficient and effective working practices.

    Anne Donaghy, Director, Environmental Services, Antrim Borough Council, says, “The Council wishes to establish a more services-orientated approach to its ICT development, with business processes and information requirements as the drivers for change rather than technology alone.”

  • UK:Biometric immigration control technology now live at Manchester Airport

    Frequent travellers from the UK and abroad will encounter the new IRIS biometric immigration control technology at Terminal 1 at Manchester Airport.

    The Iris Recognition Immigration System (IRIS) will enable registered passengers to enter the UK without queuing to see an immigration officer at passport control. Instead individuals signed up to the scheme will be able to walk up to an automated barrier, simply look into a camera and if the system recognises them enter the UK, leaving immigration officers to concentrate on other priorities.

    Cost pressures and system performance are just as important to the IT heads of local government councils as they are to senior IT executives of private enterprises. Just as in business, local government is under increased pressure to reduce costs without loss of performance, or reliability. The Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead was faced with such a dilemma; how to cost effectively store and access its archived data, whilst at the same time ensuring the integrity of data was not compromised.
  • UK:Bridgend Council offers public WiFiaccess over multi-service provider network

    Bridgend County Borough Council (BCBC) in South Wales is to become the first council to offer public WiFi access over a multi-service provider network.

    The deal, signed with WiFi provider The Cloud is for a network which will be unique in England and Wales as the only council-sponsored WiFi service where use is not restricted to the customers of one service provider.

    Citizens Advice has called for all NHS patients to be given access to CAB advice - right in the heart of healthcare settings. It's likely that online delivery of advice could play an important part in this.

    The call was made at the launch today of Prescribing Advice, a special report highlighting existing Citizens Advice services targeted especially at NHS patients.

    Staff mobility, direct-dial calling and enhanced security are just some of the benefits Halton College is experiencing, after it put in IP telephony across its two campuses.

    A long-established FE college in a high growth area to the south-east of Liverpool, the college offers a wide choice of courses, giving adults of all ages the opportunity to gain nationally recognised qualifications, including A-levels and NVQs. Serving communities on both sides of the River Mersey (in Widnes and Runcorn), the college currently has some 400 full-time staff and 10,000 students: 2,000 full-time and 8,000 part-time.
