  • South Korea: Mobile phone users communicate with government

    A manager at Wal-Mart gets a text message on his cellular phone from the Korean Food and Drug Association saying that "A is substandard food."

    He immediately orders staff to remove the food from store shelves.

    This is a picture the government has drawn as it plans to introduce a "notice service" via mobile phones and e-mails. According to the plan, it takes minutes for grocery stores nationwide to be informed of illegal foodstuffs.

  • South Korean City opens Mobile App Centre

    The Busan Metropolitan City, South Korea’s second largest metropolis with about 3.6 million residents now has a mobile application development centre as part of the government’s drive towards becoming a smart city.

    The City Government has launched an innovation centre called Busan Mobile Application Development Centre (BMAC) to operate as an application store for developers to create, test and host city services.

    The BMAC, which is built in association with Cisco and Korea Telecom marks the first phase of the city’s deployment of Smart+Connected Community (S+CC) services.

  • South Korean defence ministry develops app for employees

    The Ministry of National Defense in South Korea has developed a new smartphone application that all employees working in the ministry complex must install on their phones.

    The app, called ‘Mobile Management Device’, blocks many functions of a smartphone, such as the camera and audio recording tools. In the case of iPhones, the app even prevents users from making calls or sending text messages, only permitting the phones to receive calls and texts. Android phones can still perform those functions.

  • SZ: Govt, MTN launch m-Government services

    Government in partnership with Swazi MTN has introduced mobile based government services, dubbed m-Government.

    Through this service, citizens will use their mobile phones to access services. The programme started with the ministry of home affairs, health and the meteorology department under the ministry of tourism and environmental affairs.

    The m-Government service was launched at the Happy Valley Hotel yesterday morning.

  • Taiwan introduces ‘City Life Database’

    The mobile application of Map of Taipei Amusement (MOTA) now uses the contents provided by the “City Life Database” (CLD).

    MOTA builds on the basis of the map/city guide introduced during the summer of 2009. The service offers information and services – including instant traffic updates, taxi call service, train schedules, and more.

    Instituted by Taipei City Government, the CLD brings together a wide range of information related to the points of interest in Taipei City, retrieving the data from numerous city departments and agencies. POI categories include food, leisure and recreation, transportation, education, culture, medical service, finance, shopping, public services, and more.

  • Taiwan launches Mobile App for Public Safety

    The Ministry of Interior launched recently a mobile application which not only allows users to have improved access to public safety services but also have an opportunity to help the police force fight crime.

    The app includes features such as the 110 police service line, the 113 abuse prevention line, the 165 fraud prevention line, fugitive and stolen car information, missing person reports, road traffic information, police case reports and a taxi calling.

    New portal for all state-agency mobile apps launches next month

    Mobile applications have been developed to serve a variety of purposes, but sometimes they can cause headaches for users who are unable to find one that responds perfectly to their specific needs. The good news is that a partial solution may be on the way.

    All mobile apps developed by government ministries and other public-sector organisations are to be gathered together under one portal, a website which will be taken care of by the Electronic Government Agency (EGA), an independent supervisory body set up a couple of years back. Operated by the newly minted Government Application Centre (GAC), this website (https://apps.go.th) will be officially launched next month.

  • Thailand to launch mobile app for income tax submission

    The Revenue Department (RD), Thailand will launch a mobile app for the submission of personal income tax by mid of March as the latest e-service for smart phone users.

    RD Director-General Satit Rungkasiri said that the department has been piloted the app and is now confident that the new mobile service is user-friendly, fast, and convenient for users. “Moreover, the app can facilitate high-security financial transactions with banks via mobile phones.”

    As part of its continuing efforts to make its findings and recommendations available to a wide range of audiences, the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) has launched a mobile version of its website that will allow users to more easily access GAO reports on their BlackBerrys, iPhones, Droids, and other small-screen mobile devices.

    “People are increasingly using mobile devices to access the internet and GAO’s mobile website will enable more users to quickly get to GAO’s most recent reports, testimonies, and legal decisions and learn about our efforts to promote accountability and help improve government performance,” said Gene Dodaro, Acting Comptroller General of the United States and head of the GAO. “This initiative will help ensure our work is as accessible as possible, both for Congress and the public.”
