  • Malta: Hospital waiting lists are a scandal - Dalli

Social Policy Minister John Dalli yesterday described the hospital waiting lists as "scandalous" saying it was unheard of that one had to wait up to five years for certain operations.

Focusing on e-health during his contribution to the debate in Parliament on the Central Registry Bill, Mr Dalli said that, where necessary, he was willing to consult with everyone. But decisions had to be taken. It was not on that one had to be put on a waiting list for an operation which would take only a few minutes. There had to be good, disciplined management putting patients first and providing them with the best possible service.

  • Malta: House debates IT development

The opposition spokesman for information technology, Leo Brincat, said on Thursday that the government's use of the Microsoft deal in its electoral campaign had been misleading and deceptive and people who had received software at a reduced price were only now finding out that their investment would have to be substantially higher.

Speaking in parliament during the budget debate on the Ministry of IT and Public Investments, Mr Brincat said that although a lot had been done in Malta in the IT sector, there was still a lot more to do and the country must be quick off the mark if it was not to be overtaken by competing neighbours.

The rise has been slow but steady: In 2005, only 46 per cent of homes had internet access.

Different penetration rates were obtained when comparing internet access by household type and household income. In fact, internet access in households rose from 36 per cent for households earning less than €10,000 to 93 per cent for households earning €25,000 or more.

A Labour government would transform Malta into an "intelligent island" with a knowledge-driven economy by developing and exploiting ICT skills to create new opportunities and apply creative solutions, the draft vision statement on Information and Communication Technology, launched yesterday by the MLP, said.

In government, it would act as a "catalyst" and not manage the ICT sector, as was the case at the moment, said Labour MP Leo Brincat, who drew up the document.
