  • Malta: Leading edge technology at Examinations Department

September MATSEC results to be provided by mobile phone

E-Government and the recently launched m-Government have brought about leaps in the quality of services being offered by government departments. Numerous services, which up till a few years ago were only accessible by physically visiting the respective department, can now be accessed over the Internet and mobile phone.

  • Malta: 'Building of e-government' nearing completion

Around 95 per cent of the government's services should be available online in the next six to nine months thanks to the introduction of a state-of-the-art electronic identification system, IT and Investment Minister Austin Gatt said yesterday.

The system was the "last pillar in the building of e-government", allowing private information to be accessed by the appropriate individuals, he said.

  • Malta: 4 more e-government initiatives

Three more e-government services - the eHealth portal, Online Certificates and Scholarships website - and an e-Government services directory were launched on Thursday.

Funded by MITC through the e-Government Alliance Framework and managed by the Malta Information Technology Agency (MITA), these initiatives are aimed at improving the service delivery channels available between the government and citizens.

  • Malta: A new simple way to acquire certificates from the public registry online

The Public Registry is now offering a new online service: certifikati.gov.mt as part of the e-Government Programme launched by the Ministry for Justice and Local Government. Maltese nationals are now able to order and pay for birth, marriage and death certificates through the Internet.
  • Malta: All Government services online by 2010

All Government services, including those which are not used very often, will be accessible online by the year 2010, Minister for Investments, Industry and IT Austin Gatt announced.

The ambitious project will make Malta unique and should place it at the top of the European rankings on e-Government.

  • Malta: Almost all government services will be online by this year

The government will launch a bundle of tenders for 45 different services within the next few weeks, which will make the tendering process more efficient and less time-consuming, and finally put all available government services online, Industry, Investment and Information Technology Minister Austin Gatt said yesterday.

Minister Gatt was speaking at the launch of the e-government service under which applicants can apply for children’s allowances online, which was organised in collaboration with the Family and Social Solidarity Ministry.

  • Malta: Almost all vehicle licence and policy renewals done online

A total of 186,186 people or insurance agents made use of the eVERA online vehicle licence service in 2007 with many more expected to follow suit in using the newly set up online driving licence renewal service, which was launched by the Malta Transport Authority yesterday.

The launch of the new service was held at the Malta Transport Authority offices in Sa Maison yesterday and was attended by ADT chairman Joe Gerada, IT Minister Austin Gatt and Roads Minister Jesmond Mugliett.

  • Malta: Apply online for marriage grants

Over 4,000 married individuals each year may benefit from the new marriage grants online service launched by the Ministry for Justice and Local Government and the Ministry for Social Policy. This is another new service being launched as part of the on-going e-Government programme.
  • Malta: Authentication system developed locally to be replicated abroad

A state-of-the-art electronic authentication system, developed locally by Microsoft and MITTS, has attracted considerable international interest.

The system is designed to be replicated and deployed in foreign jurisdictions.

  • Malta: Bandwidth to double in state schools and departments

The Malta Information Technology Agency (MITA) has entered into a three-year agreement with Vodafone Malta Ltd for the provision of internet bandwidth and routing services to meet the growing demand within government departments and state schools.

Apart from enhancing the quality of its bandwidth, through this agreement, MITA will be doubling the internet bandwidth currently provided to departments and schools. MITA offers internet services to approximately 16,500 public service users and more than 30,000 students across all state schools.

  • Malta: Broadband Internet for €3 a month

The government has launched a scheme whereby families can obtain Broadband Internet for €3 (Lm 1.29) a month. The scheme is being subsidized by the government following agreements reached with various Internet Service Providers (ISPs).

Investments and IT Minister Austin Gatt said that the government wants all families to access electronic services offered by the eGovernment in the future such as sales of products and services online, online banking and e-learning.

  • Malta: Broken link blamed for online licence renewal unavailability

The renewal of road licences online is at present not available through the Malta Transport Authority’s website, because this site does not link up with the site to process these applications.

The Malta Independent last week reported that more than a quarter of the road licences which had to be renewed in November and which did not need a VRT certificate, had been renewed online, through the online renewal facility offered by the Malta Transport Authority.

  • Malta: Budget debate on investment and IT

The parliamentary sitting which discussed the ministry of IT and investment saw most speakers focusing on one or the other subject on Thursday.

A resume of Dr Gatt's speech on investment has already been carried on TMID.

  • Malta: Bureaucratic obstacles in public service

In its pre-budget document for this year, which was far less technical than that for next year published a few weeks ago, the government had laid down as one of the objectives in its information technology strategy the re-invention "of the government of Malta by transforming the public service in terms of its service delivery and governance". It sounds a bit bombastic, but at least insofar as the first part of the objective is concerned, great progress has indeed been made. Indeed, it was announced only recently that Maltese e-government services have made it to the final stage of the European e-Government Awards 2009 organised by the European Commission.

However, as regards governance, taken in all its aspects, the wheels still grind excruciatingly slow, leading to frustration and shortcomings that are all too often so evident that one wonders how the whole public service machine works.

  • Malta: Combating the silo mentality

Advances in technology are opening up a new world of possibilities in the E-Commerce and Internet world. They are unleashing the potential of mobile connectivity in the commercial and public sectors. The result will be a new age of mobile and consumer electronics appliances in the form of multifunctional gadgets which deliver anytime, anywhere operation in true WI-FI connectivity. The new digital world of convergence will be driven by increasing speed and adhering to the highest standards which follow the millions of euros invested annually in R&D.
  • Malta: Companies join e-government alliance

The government has formed an 'e-government alliance' with 14 software development companies to develop and commission 40 new e-government services.

The alliance was announced by IT Minister Austin Gatt who said that the government's ultimate target is for Malta to be the leading European country in the provision of e-government services. It is currently second.

  • Malta: Connecting businesses and government

For the business community, transacting online with the government is now becoming the norm. Having easy and convenient online access to government services at all times means saving time and money for businesses. This is in line with Malta’s national drive to promote a pro-enterprise environment and to facilitate business growth.
  • Malta: Digital divide on the decline - IT Ministry

Quoting studies by the National Statistics Office, the Ministry for Investment, Industry and Information Technology (MITI), said that the government programs to eliminate the digital divide have substantially progressed during last year.

In a press statement, the Ministry said that the HelloIT program has considerably decreased computer and software prices, making them more accessible to a larger public.

  • Malta: Drehscheibe für IT im Mittelmeerraum

  • Malta: E-government launched for Data Protection Commission

Minister Austin Gatt launched e-government services for the office of the Data Protection Commissioner on Wednesday morning. He described the work carried out by the commission and said that while it could have been a bureaucratic structure, it is showing good potential as a revenue generator for the government.
