  • Nigeria’s Internet growth in 2014 peaked at 52%

    The minister disclosed this at a press briefing to mark the 2015 World Telecommunications and Information Society Day and the 150th anniversary of the International Telecommunications Union in Abuja on Monday.

    Represented by the Director of e-Government at the ministry, Mr. Tope Fashedemi, the minister also said telecommunications has remained a key driver of the Nigerian economy since it was liberalized in 2001.

  • Nigeria’s internet users decry poor services

    It was a tale of woes by internet data users at the 10th anniversary of the Telecom Consumers Parliament on Friday in Lagos as they complained of high costs and services being offered not being commensurate with money paid.

    Mr Muyideen Mohammed, one of the consumers, said that his modem was always disconnecting whenever he tried to connect the Internet. He said that he had been forced to change his Internet service provider as a result of his experience.

  • Nigeria’s Long Road To Broadband Development

    In the last 11 years, much progress was made in Nigeria in the area of voice telephony leading to over 105 million active lines, emergence of four active Global System for Mobile communications (GSM) networks, several Unified Access Service Licence (UASL) operators and Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) operators. Despite Nigeria’s success achieved with voice telephony, the country performed below expectation in the area of broadband.

    Recently President Goodluck Jonathan inaugurated a Presidential Committee on Broadband Development to come up with a proactive broadband development roadmap that would see Nigeria emerge a digital economy in the next few years by developing critical infrastructures, local content capabilities and capitalise on the country’s abundant intellectual resources in the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) field.

  • Nigeria’s multi-million naira telemedicine project in Limbo

    Nigeria’s telemedicine project championed by the Federal ministry of Science and Technology in collaboration with the Federal ministry of health is yet to fly years after it was launched with an ambitious take off grant worth hundreds of million naira.

    The project, which was prosecuted by a consortium of Nigerian experts through the Federal ministry of Science and Technology under the headship of Professor Turner Isoun, was intended to bridge the huge healthcare delivery gap that currently exists in the country by deploying Information Technologies to bypass logistic challenges.

  • Nigeria’s older generation going online: Twinpine Research

    Twinpine Networks, Africa’s first premium mobile advertising network in a recent research survey covering various demographics across Nigeria showed that contrary to the popular assumption, the older generation of internet users in Nigeria are more active than the younger generation. The study carried out by Twinpine Neworks was a comparative study taken from about twenty two thousand respondents which showed that internet users between the ages of 53 to 33 years (Generation X) were more active on the internet when matched against their counterparts aged 32 to 19 years of age (Generation Y).

    This paints a different picture from the generally accepted idea that the internet is the medium of the younger generation. Speaking about the findings, Research Lead at Twinpine Eniola Moronfolu said, “This knowledge is an eye opener and shows how trends in internet usage are taking shape among consumers. This also means that marketing efforts can be more effectively targeted to reach the right demographics”.

  • Nigeria’s Satellite-3 to guarantee internet penetration, says official

    The Director-General of the Nigerian Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Professor Cleopas Angaye,,says the deployment of the Submarine Cable System (SAT-3) will accelerate Internet penetration in the country.

    Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting on feasibility study on SAT-3 held in Abuja on Thursday, Angaye said that deployment of SAT-3 would enhance interfaces, network security issues, e-Government and e-payment.

  • Nigeria’s Smart Port City Construction Commences

    State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara has flagged off the construction of Nigeria’s Smart Port City in Eleme local government area of Rivers State.

    Speaking at the event, Governor Fubara disclosed that the new Port Smart City construction, which is coming from a joint venture between the state government and Rainbow Heritage Group, is important to decongest Port Harcourt and realign the state with modern developmental realities.

    Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has said that its recent deployment of Windows Server 2012, has improved the agencies services as well as led to the reduction of its Information Technology costs.

    The Chief Information Officer, (CIO) of NAMA, Mr. Ogochukwu Ifeanyi, in a statement made available to THISDAY, stated that NAMA has a mandate to ensure safe, efficient, expeditious and economic flight operations in Nigeria with state of the art technology solutions.

  • Nigerian banks to start capturing customers’ biometric data

    Nigerian banks would on Monday begin to capture the biometric data of customers, beginning with Lagos state as directed by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Bankers’ Committee.The exercise would be nationwide as a measure to attain Bank Verification Numbers (BVN) and Know Your Customer (KYC) system.

    A statement by the CBN on Saturday said that the BVN exercise involves the capturing of an individual’s basic biometric data information, including the facial image, the 10 fingerprints as well as other unique features of the customer.

  • Nigerian Communications Commission seeks more investment in broadband infrastructure

    The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has called for more investments in broadband infrastructure in the country to enable egovernment. The Executive Vice Chairman of the Commission, Prof Umar Danbatta, made the call at the Nigeria e-Government Summit 2021.

    To achieve this, the EVC also called for increased collaboration of all stakeholders in order to remove barriers to investment which include multiple taxation and regulation, arbitrary pricing of bottleneck resources such as Right-of-Way (RoW), timeconsuming and unfriendly approval processes.

    The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has approved the construction of a N1 billion Digital Park in Ibadan, Oyo State.

    Professor Adeolu Akande, Chairman of the Commission, made this disclosure during a meeting with youth leaders across the state at an end of the year session in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital.

    The Executive Vice Chairman, Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Umar Danbatta, has said the commission is working with stakeholders to deepen penetration of broadband infrastructure and services in Nigeria.

  • Nigerian Communications Commission: Nationwide Broadband Rollout Imminent

    The much-expected nationwide broadband rollout plan that will provide cheap and easy access to internet will soon commence, according to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

    The Commission who dropped the hint in Lagos at the ongoing West African Information and Communications Technology (WAFICT) Congress and Exhibition, said it had engaged reputable internationally acclaimed consultants to drive the strategy and design the processes for achieving the broadband goals, and that the report would soon be ready.

    Executive Vice-Chairman of NCC, Dr Eugene Juwah, who spoke at the WAFICT congress, said the commission had concluded preliminary studies to enable cost effective broadband deployment.

  • Nigerian Courts Should Be ICT Compliant

    A lawyer, Mr. Seun Adenuga, has urged the country’s courts to use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) tools to facilitate effective justice delivery.

    Adenuga told newsmen in Lagos that it was sad that many judges still recorded court proceedings manually, instead of using electronic recorders.

    “In many magistrates’ courts across the country, you find that they still use the manual and obsolete method of record keeping.

    On May 13, 2009, Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) completed the process of re-delegation of the .ng domain name from temporary authorities to the current Nigerian ones. For many years, Randy Bush has been the Technical contact of the .ng domain name. With the IANA re-delegation, the technical contact is now the local Nigerian DNS administrator, while the administrative contact is the president of Nigeria Internet Registration Association.

    Federal government has been urged to urgently develop and establish an effective strategy for the implementation of e- Health in Nigeria.

    After China and Nigeria elevated their ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership, Uba Sani, the governor of Nigeria's Kaduna State, said he is thrilled to see his state partner with China in a "smart city" project, which aligns with the country's industrialization.

    Kaduna State lies at the southern end of Nigeria's northern plateau, and 80 percent of its 5 million population work in agriculture, according to media reports.
