  • Nigerian: FG Inaugurates E-Government Board

    Federal Government yesterday inaugurated the Board of Directors to oversee the activities of the National e-Government Strategies Limited (NeGSt). The board is chaired by the Director-General of National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Prof. Ajayi.

    Inaugurating the board in Abuja, Minister of Science and Technology, Prof. Turner Isoun, noted that NeGSt has within a short time, been able to help increase productivity, institutional transparency, accountability, and efficiency resulting in unprecedented and radical economic and technological growths.

    Nigerians in the Diaspora have been encouraged to get the new e-passport before December 31, 2010 since they will not be able to travel with their old passports after that date.

    The Minister of State for Interior, Mr. Humphrey Abba, sopke during a courtesy visit by the Nigerian Ambassador to the United States, Professor Ade Adefuye and said, “We are going to deploy enough mobile machines to the United Kingdom and Washington to fast track the issuance of the e-passport to Nigerians living abroad.

  • Nigerians to get ID number

    In a move to curtail insurgency and other criminal challenges confronting the country, the National Population Commission, NPC, has commenced a comprehensive biometric capturing of all Nigerians, with a view to allocating every Nigerian number that would be associated with him or her from birth to death.

    Chairman, NPC, Chief Festus Odimegwu, who disclosed this in Abuja, said the biometric capturing would also be applied to all people resident in Nigeria.

    Nigerians will have biometric identity card next year, the National Population Commission (NPC) has disclosed.

    Chairman of the commission, Chief Festus Odimegwu, disclosed this in Abuja while hosting the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Executive Director, Professor Babatunde Osho-timehin, who was on a working tour of Nigeria.

  • Nigerias new communications minister sets ambitious targets

    The new minister wants the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) to end the sale of pre-registered, unregistered and partially-registered SIM cards; stem the tide of illegal deduction of the data of subscribers and work towards the downward review of the cost of data; and ensure compliance with the maximum 2% Call Drop Rate directive to telecom operators.

    The NCC is not the only establishment that got the marching order from the new minister Dr Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami. He has also set targets for the CEOs of other parastatals under the federal ministry of communications.

  • Nihilent Nigeria inks pact with NITDA to promote e-governance, build IT capability

    Nihilent Nigeria, a leading consulting and solutions integration company based in Lagos, has signed an MOU with the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) to create a framework for e-governance awards and recognition programme, and provide training and development around IT skills.

    Nihilent, in accordance with the agreement, will work with NITDA in defining the character and ethos of the e-governance awards through various activities, including identification of different award categories, formulation of awards criteria, formation of awards committee by selecting members, definition of field survey and documentation procedure, and formalisation of awards and recognition.

  • NITDA digital centre will upgrade Nigeria’s cyber security – Pantami

    The project is in line with the National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy for a Digital Nigeria.

    The Minister for Communication and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Ali Pantami, has unveiled the new National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) digital centre, reviewed logo, vision, and mission statements, assuring that the new projects will help to upgrade Nigeria’s cyber security.

    Speaking during the Phase III Virtual Commissioning of Digital Economy Projects for a Digital Nigeria, the minister noted that the project is in line with the National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy for a Digital Nigeria.

    With the global communities employing Information and Communications Technology (ICT) to fast track their development and digitialised their economies, the National Information Technology Development Agency, (NITDA) is set to upscale its capacity building efforts through training and research of government agencies and departments as it continues the broad objectives towards boosting Nigeria’s ICT capabilities and skills in the year 2015.

  • NITDA Task Nigerian Army On ICT Compliance

    The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has challenged the Nigeria Army to embrace information technology in all its operations as it will increase its overall competence and empower them to meet up with the United Nations Peace support requirement.

    The director-general of the agency, Prof. Cleopus Angaye, threw the challenge to the army yesterday at the launch of the strategic business partnership on the Rural Information Technology Centres (RITC) and the Mobile Internet Units (MIUs) established at the Mambila Barracks in Asokoro, Abuja, for the guards brigade.

    The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), has announced the digital transformation plan of the government for the nation’s Information Communication Technology (ICT) sector.

    The newly appointed Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the agency, Mr. Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, disclosed the status of the plan in an interview in the inaugural issue of eGovernance Nigeria Magazine, from the stable of Technology Times Media Limited.

    The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) will this month host an all stakeholders' meeting to articulate views on the draft of the country's Information Communication Technology for Development (ICT4D) Action Plan. Input from stakeholders drawn from various sectors of the economy is expected to help beef up Nigeria's work plan for full integration of ICT in achieving its development goals and positioning it among the 20 leading economies in the world by year 2020.

  • Over 48 million active internet users recorded in Nigeria

    According to Dr Peter Jack, the Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Nigeria’s active internet users currently stands at over 48 million.

    In a statement issued by NITDA’s Head of Public Affairs, Mrs. Hadiza Umar, in Abuja on Tuesday, stated that Jack made the assertion in a speech he delivered at a global media event in Dubai.

    The meeting was preparatory to the Global Information Technology Exhibition Week 2014.

  • Permanent Secretary Wants Nigeria to Adopt e-Governance

    The new Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Communications, Istifanus Fuktar, says it is time for Nigeria to move away from running its affairs manually and embrace digitisation.

    Mr Fuktur said this on Tuesday during the handing over ceremony in the ministry in Abuja. He was the Permanent Secretary of the Police Service Commission before he was redeployed to the Ministry of Communications.

  • Phase3 aims to boost ICT knowledge in Nigerian schools

    A4AI member Phase3 Telecom is piloting an e-Learning initiative, called 3CEi, in 10 Nigerian schools to improve ICT knowledge in the education sector. The company is providing the necessary software and digital hardware to schools as part of the initiative, which includes learning programs made into an audio-visual format in English and French.

    Following the pilot programs, Phase3 plans for this initiative to expand to the national level while providing support for rural development. The 3CEi e-Learning initiative was created in 2013 to help build a solid foundation for Nigerian students in ICT knowledge development at primary, secondary and tertiary levels.

    Experts outline requirement for growth

    Poor internal infrastructure and faulty planning are undermining the delivery of the much needed - and recently landed - broadband internet and data capacity to Nigerians.

    This is already affecting the development of e-governance, e-commerce and e-education, analysts told BusinessDay.

    Also affected are revenues from data carriage which represent only 5 percent of the total revenues of telecom firms in Nigeria.

Nigeria ranks 8th out of a total of 212 member countries of United Nations in terms of number of internet users. Contrastingly, it occupies 128th spot in terms of internet penetration.
